What REALLY happened to McNamara

It was revealed in Grifter (second series) #3 (September 1996) that McNamara didn't actually cease to exist after blowing his brains out (Team 7 1st miniseries #2.) He became an invisible, intangible entity that survived by inhabiting the bodies of others. He kidnapped Grifter and Alicia Turner and tortured them before revealing all of this. Grifter stopped him with a psionic blast; McNamara revealed that he was losing coherency - that's why he wanted Grifter's power. Grifter tells him no, it's time to let go. McNamara isn't sure if he can, but apparently he does. End of story.
